Details announced for 75th edition of BC School Sports Girls Basketball Provincial Championships

The 75th edition of the BC School Sports Girls Basketball Provincial Championships is gearing up to be an unforgettable event, with exciting developments that will celebrate the rich history of high school girls’ basketball.

The championships feature 64 teams in four tiers and run February 26 to March 1 with all 128 games at Langley Events Centre.

In a historic first, all four championship games will be contested on the Arena Bowl Floor, offering a dramatic and immersive atmosphere for athletes, coaches, fans, and supporters alike. This is a milestone for the tournament, as it reflects the growth and prestige of the event. Over the 75 championship seasons since the first tournament held in Kelowna in 1948 there have been 165 victorious teams over the four tiers.

The championships finals are scheduled for 12:45pm (1A), 3:00pm (2A), 5:15pm (3A) and 7:30pm (4A) on Saturday, March 1.

A key highlight of this year’s championships will be the recognition of the many contributions of past teams, coaches and players who have shaped the legacy of girls’ basketball in B.C.

The LEC 75th Girls Tournament Committee is planning several displays, announcements, and events to celebrate the history, including:

Ø  A 75th edition program with expanded history of the tournament.

Ø  Displays featuring memorabilia and photos highlighting the history of high school girls’ basketball.

Ø  Alumni lounge and gathering on Saturday.

Ø  Recognition of past championship coaches during the finals.

Ø  Selection of all-decade teams spanning from 1948 to 2024.

Ø  A special Grade seven 3-on-3 girls’ tournament.

The Grade seven 3-on-3 girls’ tournament will be held in conjunction with the provincial championships with teams receiving the opportunity to play on Championship Court, providing a unique opportunity for younger athletes to showcase their skills and experience the excitement of the main event. Registration for this tournament will open in January.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate the 75th edition of these championships, and it is an exciting time to showcase the talent, passion, and determination of young women in high school basketball,” said LEC 75th Girls Tournament Committee member Jason Winslade. “This year’s event promises to be a momentous occasion that honours the past while looking to the future of girls’ basketball in BC.”

The committee is currently looking for materials for the archives including programs, photos, and team memorabilia, and to complete the written history of the championships. If you can contribute, please email history@tfse.ca.
